Councillor Column - Maylands' first public parklet
Visitors to the Maylands Town Centre will have a new spot to sit and relax after the City approved the first public parklet to be installed along Eighth Avenue. Located in a parking bay outside Milkd Café, this Maylands Business Association project is designed to provide public seating, alfresco dining, and plenty of greenery with a roof of overhead vines.
We want to make it easier, not harder, for businesses and local groups to run their own placemaking initiatives in our town centres. That's why we've reduced red tape around things like alfresco dining permits, planter boxes and parklets, welcoming the community to get creative. This project is a perfect example, with the City processing the submission from start to finish in little over a week.
Seating, greenery and parklets were at the top of the list when we asked the community how they would like to see streetscapes improved in the Maylands Town Centre. Parklets provide a place for people to take some time out in the middle of a bustling retail strip like Eighth Avenue. They encourage people to stay longer – which can only be a good thing for local businesses.
