Significant Tree Register
Tonight Council adopted a voluntary significant tree register on private land. Two years ago I supported this. Tonight I did not. It is my personal view that if someone nominates their own tree in their own yard they are unlikely to cut it down in the first place and a voluntary tree register will not be saving any tree canopy. I couldn’t vote yes for something that I felt was a waste of Officers time.
Wording of Cr Cornish’s motion as adopted by Council is as follows; “That Council: 1) Allow residents to voluntarily nominate tree/s, on their own private land, to be included in the Significant Tree Register; and 2) That the Town Planning Scheme be amended to reference the City's Significant Tree Register (STR) in order to require development approval, or written consent, to remove or harm trees listed on a City's STR.”
