Environmental Health - Swan River
The City received notification from the WA Department of Health (DOH) that a potentially toxic microscopic algae known as Alexandrium spp. is present within the Swan River from Matilda Bay/ Pelican Point to the West Swan Road Bridge, Guildford. The City has installed health warning signage at jetty’s and prominent fishing locations to help warn the public not to fish or collect crabs/ shellfish from the waters. Information has also been placed on the City’s website and on social media.
Waterland
On Friday 15 March, the Office of Mr Patrick Gorman (Federal member for Perth) announced that it has made a funding commitment of $1.5 million towards the upgrade of Maylands Waterland. This much-loved community facility was in dire need of revitalisation, but Council simply did not have the money to fund the project. However, due to the passion and commitment of the Friends of Maylands and advocacy work done by Council, we can now ensure* the facility will be enjoyed by families for many generations to come.

Seventh Avenue and Guildford Road Intersection
I have requested that our Works and Infrastructure Directorate investigate with Main Roads WA as to what has happened to planned traffic/road treatments for this intersection. As part of the Guildford Road widening it was proposed to put a set of traffic lights at this intersection. With the halting of the Guildford Road widening project, the City has not received any updates as to if the planned traffic lights installation is still planned by MRWA. Without having received as yet an official response, I have heard that it has been put on the back burner due to 1) the halting of the Guildford Road widening and 2) that residents said they did not want it for fear that it would increase traffic on 7th Avenue. I will update on this when more information becomes available.
New website launched
The City of Bayswater has launched its new website. Staff from across the organisation have worked hard to deliver a site that reflects the quality services, projects and events provided. Launching alongside the City's new website is the City Recreation website www.bayswaterrecreation.com.au. This project has been in the works for a number of years and is designed to integrate into the City's website but have significant functionality specific to Recreation Users.
South Ward Environmental Areas
Maylands Lakes - The City in conjunction with the Friends of Maylands Lakes will be planting 17,000 plants for the revegetation of Maylands Lakes. The plants will assist in removing nutrients from the lake and aims to reduce water quality issues.
Clarkson Reserve/Maylands Foreshore Reserve - The Bushcare team have been working with the Friends of Maylands Samphires to develop chemical free weed control methodology within revegetation sites. The team have installed black plastic to solarise Couch grass and Carex divisa (sedge) within the 'Threatened Ecological Community' within Maylands Samphires.
Bardon Park Wetland - Restoration works have commenced, which are funded by the Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions and Perth NRM. With the assistance of the Friends of Bardon Park, works will occur over the next three years and involves the removal of weeds and installing native plants. Current works include removal of introduced species such as pepper trees, casuarinas and Lantana. Planting will occur in winter 2019 and 2020 with the site receiving approximately 20,000 new plants.
