Councillor Column - Conserving water over winter
The City of Bayswater is recognised by the Water Corporation as a 'Gold Waterwise' Council for our water quality and conservation practices. So over the winter to maintain this status we'll be working to further minimise our water use.
However, to keep our irrigation systems in good condition, which reduces leaks and the potential for wasting water, the City will occasionally test the systems in our parks and reserves.
Everyone can help to reduce water use by complying with the winter sprinkler ban and turning-off garden sprinklers. This will conserve Perth's water supply and provide an opportunity for our dams and aquifers to refill. Lower temperatures and higher rainfall over winter means our lawns; veggie gardens and flower beds don't need to be topped up.
The State Government introduced the winter sprinkler ban in 2010. The ban is an effective way of reducing water use and estimates suggest that each year the initiative saves enough water to fill Subiaco Oval five times over. That's about 5 billion litres each year.
